They call them the “building blocks of beauty” and it’s a well-deserved accolade. They’re becoming ever more present in cosmetic formulae and they have a fundamental role in the correct functioning of the skin. We take a more in-depth look into what they are and why they are so important for us!

It’s possible that you’ve noticed it already, ceramides are becoming more and more usual in beauty products for both skin and hair. But why are they so important for our skin? What role do they play in our organism? What do they protect us from? Here we give you the answer to all of these questions.

What are ceramides?

Ceramides are intercellular lipids which are found in the four layers of the epidermis, hair and nails and are responsible for cellular cohesion to prevent the tissues from drying out. Put in another way, they’re the cement that occupies the spaces between cells, acting as a barrier within the skin. They prevent moisture loss, prevent damage that may be caused by environmental factors and limit the penetration of harmful substances such as pollutants, cigarette smoke, dust and UV rays.

Their role is essential when it comes to the correct functioning of the skin. If there are no ceramides then the barrier is ineffective, as the cells alone are insufficient protection.

Why are they so important for our skin?

Factors like age, the sun or other agents reduce the level of ceramides found naturally in our bodies. When this level becomes unbalanced or lessened, the skin tends to be drier which speeds up the aging process and favors the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines and may produce other skin afflictions such as eczema, atopic dermatitis or psoriasis.

How do ceramides benefit our skin?

In summary, if you care for your skin with cosmetic products that contain ceramides you’re helping the skin to:

. Retain water, improving hydration and elasticity

. Improve the protection and functioning of the epidermal barrier

. Regulate the skin’s hydro-lipid mantle

. Improve the skin to prevent deterioration or irritation caused by external agents

. Prevent cutaneous shedding
